MY FAIR LADY

MY FAIR LADY
June 2019 saw HOPs turn Harrogate Theatre's stage into a flower market in Covent Garden, London, for Lerner and Loewe's production of My Fair Lady. Originated from the George Bernard Shaw play 'Pygmalion', the show sees poor, common girl, Eliza Doolittle, wanting to live a better life and sell flowers in her own shop. The high class Professor Henry Higgins puts in the efforts to teach her to talk more 'gentile'. Meeting colourful characters on her journey of becoming a lady, we learn the lessons of respect, the importance of the English language and how opposites can attract into an uncanny relationship.

A show that was a 'Loverley' fitting for audiences of young and old, it was full of familiar songs such as 'Wouldn't It Be Lovely', 'I Could Have Danced All Night' and 'On The Street Where You Lived.' The cast filled the stage with colour from the flowers in the Flower market, to the dirt on their faces, contrasting to the Ascot Race Day in their eligant Black and White themed costumes and very large hats.

Directed by the wonderful Michael Kirkby and the youthful, yet talented new Musical Director James Greatorex, they successfully choreographed lively and heart racing dance routines and putting the casts' vocal cords to the test. The finished product was review by the audience as 'So professional like' and 'a feel good show with fantastic performers.'

The show also welcomed a fair few new members to the society! Hopefully they have enjoyed their time, joining the HOPs family and we are hoping to see more of them in the future.

Roll on May 2020, we can't wait to get back on that stage and face some new challenges!
